Pop Music
‘Pop music’ vastly known as pop music originated in the USA and UK in the mid-1950s. In the beginning ‘pop’ was stamped on any genre that was a hit or became popular at that time. Pop and Rock were considered to be the same until the 1960s.
Different people have different takes on the genre. While some believe that pop is an independent body of music distinguishable from popular jazz and folk music, others beg to differ. Like Pete Seeger who believes that pop is a “professional music which draws upon both folk music and fine arts music.”
Pop is widely seen as single-chart music. “Instant singles-based music aimed at teenagers” in contrast to “album based music for adults.” (Wikipedia)
This genre has been continuously evolving since its inception in the industrialization period in the 1800s. It has been catering to the tastes and likings of the urban middle class throughout the ages. The word ‘pop song’ was first used in 1926 to describe the songs which had a popular appeal.
Initially ‘pop’ started out as ‘popular’ but as the years went by people started seeing it as ‘non-classical songs’. The type that The Beatles, the Rolling stones and ABBA would play. But people from different parts of the world had different takes on it. While in the 1960s Americans would closely associate it with Rock ‘n roll, the English saw it as ‘music with a beat’.
From 1967 a division was set between rock and pop. Hence the two genres gained generic significance. Pop has become a commercial form of music designed to appeal to everyone. According to musicologist Simon Frith this particular genre is produced ‘’as a matter of enterprise not art.’’ And ‘’it is not driven by any significant ambition except profit and commercial reward and in musical terms, it is essentially conservative.”
